Arthur Jarvis University commissions optometry clinic, inducts seven new doctors

Arthur Jarvis University, Akpabuyo, Cross River State, has commissioned a multi-million-naira optometry clinic.

This is aimed at boosting eye-care training and services in the Niger Delta. The facility, supported by Optometry Giving Sight (OGS) and implemented by Charis Vision and Health Mission (CharisHealth), was unveiled on Wednesday.

The university also inducted seven new Doctors of Optometry at a separate ceremony held on Thursday at Transcorp Hotel, Calabar.

The three-day programme marked one of the biggest investments in optometry education in the region.

Speaking at the commissioning, the CEO of CharisHealth and facilitator of the OGS grant, Dr Anne Ebri Ekong, said the intervention was designed to strengthen optometry training at the university through world-class equipment, trainer support and community outreach.

She said the region continues to suffer from a severe shortage of optometrists despite a combined population of over 25 million people across Cross River, Benue, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Ebonyi states.

“This project aims to increase the number of qualified optometrists and tackle eye-health challenges, especially in communities where cultural beliefs stop people from seeking care,” she said, adding that at least 8,000 people are expected to benefit directly.

Dr Ekong noted that the clinic will serve both training needs and community health.

“Don’t say it’s students that will attend to you. We have qualified optometrists and senior lecturers providing services. Some of the equipment here are not available in certain teaching hospitals,” she said.

Registrar/CEO of the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria, Dr Obinna Awiaka, described the project as a “historic investment” in Nigeria’s health sector and commended Dr Ekong for her transparency.

“This woman could have diverted the funds, but she chose to write her name in gold. Hundreds of millions have been invested in this community,” he said.

He urged the Akpabuyo Local Government to improve access roads and mobilise residents to utilise the facility. He also advised parents and youths to embrace optometry, which he described as one of the most sought-after professions globally.

The Chairman of Akpabuyo Local Government, represented by Hon Effiong Bassey, applauded the initiative and assured partners of continuous government support.

At the induction ceremony for the new optometrists, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Joe Edet, hailed the milestone as a defining moment for the institution.

“Today is not just about completing a programme; it is a celebration of commitment, perseverance and character,” he said.

He added that choosing Transcorp Hotel for the ceremony reflects the university’s rising profile.

“Optometry is a calling. The responsibility you assume today goes beyond the classroom. The world needs dedicated and empathetic professionals,” he told the inductees.

Officials say the newly commissioned clinic houses high-end diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, some of which are not available in many Nigerian teaching hospitals.

With the commissioning of the clinic and the induction of its latest graduates, Arthur Jarvis University is positioning itself as a major hub for optometry training and eye-care services in the South-South.

Highlight of the event was the event was an award given to Dr Adams Brayn Akiba as the best graduating student Optometry for 2024/2025 academic year.

The event drew academics, health-sector leaders, traditional rulers, community stakeholders and students, who described the development as “a new dawn for eye health in the Niger Delta.”

Bakassi CRO, Nkese Ita, Calls for 'Voter Awakening' to Drive Development

CALABAR - The Community Relations Officer (CRO) for Bakassi Local Government Area, Nkese Ita, has called on all Bakassi indigenes to take the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise seriously and fulfil their civic responsibilities

Speaking in an exclusive interview with our reporter, Nkese described voter registration as the first step toward rebuilding Bakassi and strengthening the political voice of the people. She said Bakassi cannot continue to suffer underdevelopment while its population remains poorly represented politically.

According to her, “Bakassi needs a voter awakening. Every eligible person must come out and register. Our LGA cannot continue this way. We need the numbers to reposition Bakassi politically and attract real development.”

Nkese appreciated Governor Bassey Edet Otu for giving her the platform to serve, noting that her role as CRO has been both rewarding and impactful. She commended the current administration for the efforts already made to recover the lost glory of Bakassi, especially in restoring peace and improving the welfare of residents.

The grassroots mobilizer decried the long-standing underdevelopment in Bakassi despite its rich natural and human resources. She said it is time for unity and collective action among leaders, stakeholders, youths, and community influencers.

“Bakassi is blessed, but we are not where we should be. This is why we must come together. Peace, unity, and active participation are the only way forward,” she said.

Nkese also appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to create more registration centres across Bakassi LGA, especially in hard-to-reach communities. She noted that many residents face mobility challenges and may be left out if access remains limited.

She maintained that with proper mobilization, Bakassi can record one of the highest CVR turnouts in Cross River State, stressing that voter strength is key to political relevance.

She used the opportunity to call on women, youths, elders, and community influencers to join hands to build a peaceful and progressive Bakassi, noting that development only thrives where peace and civic participation are strong.

Nkese Ita has a long history of grassroots leadership, beginning from her student days. She has served in the Youth Council of Nigeria, worked as a Supervisor at Bakassi Local Government Council, and is currently serving as the Community Relations Officer for Bakassi LGA.

She called on all eligible voters in Bakassi and across Cross River State to seize the opportunity to register, saying a stronger voter base will help secure a better future for the area.

This training program, part of a UNICEF-assisted community engagement initiative, aims to empower these youth leaders in essential family practices, including antenatal care, immunization, exclusive breastfeeding, complementary feeding, birth registration, and the reduction of open defecation. They are expected to advocate for these practices at the community level.

Invest in Her Safety: PadBank Champions Menstrual Dignity in Marking 2025 Activism Against GBV

 PRESS STATEMENT

PADBANK MOBILE OUTREACH ON THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE 2025 INTERNATIONAL 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

25th November 2025

PadBank Mobile Outreach joins millions across the world today to mark the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, an annual global campaign calling for the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls.

As an initiative committed to ending menstrual poverty, promoting dignity, and empowering the girl child, PadBank recognizes that gender-based violence goes beyond physical harm, it also includes structural, cultural, and economic barriers that limit a girl’s ability to live with freedom, confidence, and equal opportunity.

One of these silent but devastating barriers is menstrual inequality, which continues to expose thousands of girls to shame, stigma, exploitation, and educational disadvantages.

Across many underserved communities in Cross River State, girls still face discrimination, mockery, and emotional abuse simply because they cannot access sanitary pads. Some are forced into unsafe alternatives, while others engage in risky coping mechanisms, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and gender-based violence.

This year’s theme, “UNiTE! Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women & Girls,” directly speaks to the heart of our mission at PadBank. We believe that access to menstrual products is not a luxury, it is a right, and providing pads, education, and psychosocial support is a crucial investment in the safety and dignity of young girls.

As we enter this 16-day global campaign, PadBank Mobile Outreach reaffirms its commitment to:

Reaching girls in rural and hard-to-reach communities;

Providing safe menstrual health education and empowerment;

Creating safe spaces for girls to speak, learn, and grow;

Advocating for a society where girls are protected, valued, and respected.

We call on government agencies, NGOs, faith leaders, community stakeholders, and well-meaning individuals to join us in this movement. Ending gender-based violence is a collective responsibility, and every act of support brings us one step closer to a safer world for women and girls.

PadBank remains committed to breaking the silence, ending the stigma, and ensuring that no girl is left behind because of her period.

Together, let us act, speak, and stand for a world free from violence.

Mens Life Matters: C’River State Planning Commission Marks 2025 Int’l Men’s Day

Ukorebi Esien

CALABAR — The Cross River State Planning Commission on Wednesday joined the global community to commemorate the 2025 International Men’s Day with a renewed pledge to prioritize men’s issues in government budgeting, programming, and policy implementation.

This was revealed in a statement by Vice Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Bong Duke, stating that the Cross River State Government would no longer ignore the unique social, economic, and health challenges faced by men across communities in Cross River State.

He noted that, despite assumptions that men are always positioned at the forefront of governance, evidence shows that many critical concerns affecting men have received little or no policy attention over the years. These include rising mental health struggles, poor health-seeking behaviour, prostate-related illnesses, substance abuse, economic pressures, unemployment among young men, and cases of male-targeted violence that often go unreported.

_“Men’s lives matter just as much as every other demographic group in our state. Balanced development requires that we stop assuming men are doing fine simply because they appear strong. Going forward, the Planning Commission will ensure that men’s issues are reflected in the State’s development plans, budget frameworks, and programme implementation strategies,”_he said.

He further announced that the Commission will direct all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to incorporate men-specific indicators into their Medium-Term Sector Strategies (MTSS) and annual work plans. This, he explained, will help the state respond more effectively to issues such as suicide prevention, mental health support, workplace safety, positive masculinity, and strengthening fatherhood and family stability.

The Vice Chairman stressed that the new commitment does not diminish the government’s ongoing focus on women, children, and vulnerable groups but instead promotes a holistic gender-responsive development framework.

_“A society is stronger when every group is supported. When men are healthy, emotionally stable, and economically empowered, families thrive, communities are safer, and development outcomes are better for all,”_ he added.

International Men’s Day, celebrated annually on November 19, focuses on six pillars, including improving men’s health, promoting positive male role models, strengthening family relations, and reducing negative gender stereotypes.

The Planning Commission said it will continue to champion inclusive planning as part of its mandate to drive sustainable development in Cross River State
