CALABAR, Cross River State — The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, Barrister Venatius A. Ikem, has resigned from his position with immediate effect, citing a crisis of direction, leadership challenges and internal divisions threatening the party’s unity and effectiveness.
Ikem announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the PDP National Secretary at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja and the State Secretary at the Cross River State Secretariat in Calabar.
In the letter, the former chairman described his decision as difficult but necessary, following what he called deep reflection on the prevailing realities within the party.
He expressed concern that internal dynamics and divergent positions within the PDP had made it increasingly difficult for him to discharge his responsibilities effectively, particularly as the party approaches a critical electoral season.
According to him, the party is grappling with a crisis of direction and leadership coherence, challenges he warned could undermine its effectiveness and threaten the sacrifices and aspirations of loyal members if left unresolved.
Ikem stated that the prevailing situation had weakened the party’s ability to pursue a clear and united political course, raising concerns about its preparedness to navigate the challenges ahead.
Despite his concerns, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have served as the state chairman for five years, acknowledging the contributions of party leaders, members and supporters who stood by him throughout his tenure.
He specifically appreciated Senator Sandy Onor and Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe for their encouragement and support during challenging moments in his political journey.
The former chairman also recognised the contributions of the PDP’s National Leader, Chief Nyesom Wike, describing his role in the party’s collective efforts as significant and worthy of recognition.
Ikem extended his appreciation to supporters across Cross River State, particularly the people of Obudu, his immediate constituency, for their loyalty, faith and commitment over the years.
Explaining his decision to step aside, he said leadership sometimes requires reassessment and renewal, adding that he had reached a point where a clearer vision and a new pathway had become necessary.
He, however, reaffirmed his commitment to the progress, stability and development of Cross River State and Nigeria, while wishing the PDP success in its future endeavours.
The resignation comes at a critical period for the opposition party as political activities gradually intensify ahead of future electoral contests.
His departure raises questions about the party’s leadership direction and internal cohesion in Cross River State, particularly regarding efforts to rebuild unity and strengthen its political position.
Ikem signed off the letter by thanking the party for the opportunity to serve, with Senator Sandy Onor copied in the correspondence.
