The torch-handing ceremony, conducted by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Sports Festival Committee, attracted top government dignitaries, including the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, the Secretary to the State Government, the Chief of Staff, the Commissioner for Sports, and key stakeholders from the NDDC. The occasion marked a symbolic moment in the state’s preparations for the festival, which aims to harness the athletic potential of youths across the Niger Delta.

Commending the NDDC for its foresight in organising the regional sporting festival, Acting Governor Odey described the initiative as a crucial step toward youth engagement and talent development. “The Niger Delta Sports Festival is a laudable initiative that will not only engage our youths but also provide a platform to groom future champions. We appreciate the NDDC for this effort and assure Team Cross River of our full support as they compete,” he stated.

The torch presentation, led by the chairperson of the local organising committee, Hon. Agnes Atsu, officially signalled the departure of Team Cross River to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where they will participate in the festival throughout April. Addressing the athletes, Odey encouraged them to seize the opportunity to showcase their prowess and bring glory to the state.

Rt. Hon. Orok Duke, the NDDC Commissioner representing Cross River, also lauded the Managing Director of the Commission, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, for his unwavering commitment to youth development. “Dr. Ogbuku and the current NDDC management have introduced several transformative initiatives, including the Sports Festival and the Youth Internship Scheme, all designed to empower young people in the region,” Duke remarked. He further expressed gratitude to the Cross River State Government for consistently supporting programmes that uplift the state’s youth.

As anticipation builds for the festival, sports stakeholders have expressed confidence in Cross River’s ability to make a strong impact. Widely acknowledged as the cradle of sporting excellence in Nigeria, the state is fielding a formidable contingent determined not just to participate but to dominate the competition. Athletes from Cross River, renowned for their impressive performances in national and international events, are set to reinforce the state’s legacy in the sporting arena.

With the symbolic reception of the tournament torch, Cross River has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to grassroots sports development and the continuous nurturing of talents that will bring honour to the state and the nation.

Nigeria Senate pushes for Sameday Elections for presidential, Gubernatorial, and legislative Offices

Nigeria’s Senate is debating a bill to hold presidential, gubernatorial, and legislative elections on the same day. The proposal aims to cut costs, boost voter participation, and improve electoral credibility. While many senators support it, concerns remain over INEC’s capacity to manage nationwide elections in one day.

Victoria omini.

Nigeria’s Senate is considering a major electoral reform that could change the country’s voting system. A bill proposing that presidential, gubernatorial, national, and state assembly elections be conducted simultaneously has passed its second reading.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Saliu Mustapha (Kwara Central), aims to streamline the electoral process, reduce costs, and minimize political tension. Mustapha argued that Nigeria’s current staggered election schedule is expensive and inefficient, with election costs ballooning from N1.5 billion in 1999 to N350 billion in 2023.

"Conducting all elections on the same day will save resources, improve voter turnout, and enhance credibility," Mustapha said, citing examples from the United States, India, and Brazil, where same-day elections are standard practice.

The proposal has gained traction among lawmakers who believe it could strengthen Nigeria’s democracy by curbing the disruptions caused by prolonged election cycles. However, concerns remain over the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) ability to handle such a large-scale election in a single day.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North) cautioned that managing multiple ballots at once could create confusion, especially for voters with limited literacy. "While the idea is promising, we must ensure INEC is logistically prepared to execute this effectively," he stated.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin assured lawmakers that the bill would undergo further scrutiny, with consultations planned to assess its feasibility. If passed, the reform could significantly reshape Nigeria’s election process.

FG pays corps member N77,000 monthly allowance

The Federal Government has officially commenced payment of N77,000 monthly allowance to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.

Victoria Omini.

The announcement of a pay increase by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu which earlier brought relief and excitement among corps members nationwide, was met with disappointment following delays in implementation of the new allowance.

For almost six months after the announcement in September 2024, serving corps members were paid the previous N33,000 allowance introduced in 2020 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Confirming the development to Tribune Online, a serving corps member in Kwara State, simply identified as Adepoju, said the scheme has commenced N77,000, describing the increase as “long overdue.”

He opined that the payment is possibly being disbursed in batches, noting that while some corps members had already received theirs, others were still anxiously waiting.

Meanwhile, this increment aligns with the new minimum wage adjustments advocated by labour unions and the government

CROSIEC Boss Slams Fake News, Calls for Responsible Journalism

Calabar, March 2025 – The Chairman of the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC), Dr. Ekong Boco, has strongly condemned the spread of false and sensational reports, calling out journalists who fail to verify their information before publication.

This comes after a viral post falsely alleged that the salaries of CROSIEC staff had not been paid because a rat had eaten the commission’s server. Reacting to the misleading claim, Dr. Boco dismissed it as “baseless and unprofessional,” stressing that CROSIEC neither owns a server nor is responsible for salary payments.

“This commission does not handle salary payments. We receive salaries like every other civil servant in the state. It is the Accountant General’s office that processes payments, and the delay in salaries has already been addressed by His Excellency,” Dr. Boco clarified.

Expressing his disappointment over the false report, the CROSIEC boss criticized the journalist behind it for failing to seek clarification. “A responsible journalist would have reached out for verification before publishing such nonsense. This is how fake journalism thrives—by spreading lies instead of facts,” he fumed.

Dr. Boco urged the public to disregard misleading reports and called on media practitioners to uphold ethical standards. “Journalism is meant to inform, not mislead. If you call yourself a journalist, do your job properly—verify, balance, and report the truth,” he stated.

As misinformation continues to threaten the credibility of media institutions, this incident serves as a wake-up call for practitioners to prioritize accuracy over sensationalism. Fake news may trend, but truth and professionalism will always stand the test of time.

Opposition Lawmakers Brace for Showdown with Tinubu as Senate, House minority leaders remain in Wike's pocket more from peoples Gazette

Opposition lawmakers are gearing up for a showdown with President Bola Tinubu as he heads to the National Assembly to seek ratification and approval of the state of emergency he declared in Rivers on Tuesday over the unending political crisis, Peoples Gazette has learn

Victoria Omini.

The parliament will be very hot today,” a lawmaker said under anonymity to discuss the upcoming rancour. “Most opposition lawmakers are very angry, but their leaders in the House and Senate are controlled and loyal only to Nyesom Wike.”

Mr Tinubu declared emergency rule in Rivers on Tuesday after The Gazette had exclusively reported the president’s political plot, citing worsening political tensions between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and lawmakers loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike.

During a televised broadcast, Mr Tinubu announced the immediate suspension of Mr Fubara, other elected officials in the state for six months and appointment of a former Chief of Naval Staff, Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, as Rivers’ sole administrator , adding that the proclamation has been sent to the National Assembly for approval.

Ahead of the consideration of the proclamation by the House of Representatives and the Senate, which is expected to begin on Wednesday, the lawmaker told The Gazette that most of the opposition lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party , Labour Party and other parties in the parliament were planning to oppose approval of the emergency rule.

This development of a united front poses a significant threat to any potential approval of Mr Tinubu’s declaration in the parliament, as Section 305(4) of the Nigerian Constitution stipulates that a two-thirds majority of the National Assembly must back the president’s decision for it to come into effect.

Despite recent defections to the All Progressives Congress, the party is far from getting a two-thirds majority in the national parliament against a united opposition as they have only gained 10 new members combined in both chambers.

Mr Tinubu needs the backing of at least 72 lawmakers in the Senate and 240 in the House of Representatives for his proclamation to gain legal footing, and the APC is far from those figures in both chambers.

The APC has 57 and 162 seats in the Senate and House of Representatives respectively following the completion of the 2023 House of Assembly election.

It is unclear whether opposition lawmakers would be willing to work together to stop Mr Tinubu as the lawmaker who spoke to The Gazette alleged that Mr Wike controls minority leaders in the parliament.

I said Voting Tinubu Means Hardship, I'm saying Again: " Hardship will end your second Term Because..."- Ayodele

Primate Elijah Ayodele has urged President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action to address Nigeria's worsening economic crisis, warning that the situation is dire and affecting Nigerians' ability to afford basic necessities.

Victoria omini.

Primate Elijah Ayodele, leader of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, has issued a dire warning to President Bola Tinubu, stressing the need for urgent action to address Nigeria's worsening economic crisis. In a statement released on March 18, 2025, Ayodele emphasized that the country's economic challenges must be tackled promptly to prevent further deterioration.

Ayodele highlighted the devastating impact of the escalating cost of living, which has left many Nigerians struggling to afford basic necessities. He even noted that the situation has become so dire that people are finding it challenging to fast during the fasting period.

The cleric's warning comes as President Tinubu's administration faces growing pressure to address the country's economic woes. With the cost of living continuing to rise, many Nigerians are feeling the pinch, and Ayodele's warning serves as a stark reminder of the need for urgent action.

Peter Obi, has described the Declaration of state of Emergency in Rivers as Undemocratic

Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has denounced President Tinubu's declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State as undemocratic and unconstitutional. Obi argues that removing a serving governor unilaterally undermines Nigeria's democracy and sets a dangerous precedent.

 Victoria omini.

The 2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has described the declaration of state of emergency in Rivers as undemocratic.

In a reaction on his X handle on Wednesday, Mr Obi said that the action was against the rule of law, and capable of undermining Nigeria’s democracy.

Mr Obi said that it was grossly unconstitutional to remove a serving governor of a state through a unilateral declaration of state of emergency.

He said that the situation was capable of undoing the progress the country had made in the past 26 years of its democratic journey.

“The situation in Rivers does not justify such an extreme measure, it is also a biased interpretation of Section 305(1) of the 1999 constitution.

“A state of emergency does not mean that an elected governor can be removed unilaterally.

“The decision does not align with democratic norms and good governance. It appears to be a predetermined action serving specific interests rather than the collective good of Rivers people and Nigeria.

“This action constitutes an unconstitutional overreach, setting a dangerous precedent that threatens democracy, the rule of law, and the separation of powers,” he said.

Mr Obi urged the National Assembly and all stakeholders not to allow the decision to stand in the interest of democracy and the wellbeing of Rivers people.

Emergency Rule: Tension as soldiers, Tanks move into Fubara's Rivers Govt House

Armed Nigerian soldiers with their Armoured Personnel Carrier have taken over the Rivers State Government House along Azikiwe Road in Port Harcourt

Victoria omini.

• The troops stormed the premises of the Rivers Government around 9pm on Tuesday, March 18, 2025

• This was after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers state and suspended Governor Sim Fubara and the state house of assembly for six months

• Port Harcourt, Rivers state - Armed Nigerian soldiers have taken over the Rivers State Government House along Azikiwe Road in Port Harcourt following the declaration of a state of emergency.

As reported by The Punch, an insider said the troops stormed the premises while the suspended governor Sim Fubara was still in his official residence in the Government House around 9 pm on Tuesday, march 19, 2025.

The source stated that:

“Well, as I speak to you now, there are soldiers inside Government House but the governor is in his residence.”

It was also gathered that an Armoured Personnel Carrier was stationed at the entrance of the seat of power in the state overlooking the road.

As at 9 pm, several Sports Utility Vehicles were sighted outside the main gate with full lights on.

It could not be ascertained if the suspended governor was about to leave the Government House.

Residents and motorists were seen rushing home to their families in many parts of the Port Harcourt metropolis immediately after President Tinubu declared the state of emergency in a nationwide broadcast.

Some residents expressed dismay over the announcement and blamed the political actors for what happened.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) accused suspended governor Fubara of setting the stage for the declaration.

According to APC spokesman, Felix Morka, Fubara's action "stripped himself of all constitutional protections of the office of Governor”

The spokesman of the House, Akintunde Rotimi, said President Tinubu consulted the leadership of the National Assembly before taking the decision.

According to Rotimi, Tinubu has written to the House seeking approval in line with Section 305 of the Constitution.

The suspended governor insisted that he followed the rule of law in the political crisis that has been rocking the state barely six months after he resumed office on May 29, 2023.

Fubara further described the declaration by President Tinubu as "unfortunate" and vowed that the state will remain resilient in the face of the political challenges.

El-Rufai Denies Corruption Allegations, Dares Accusers to Come Forward

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has vehemently denied receiving bribes or kickbacks from contractors during his tenure. El-Rufai challenged anyone with evidence of corruption to come forward, stating "I have never stolen a kobo from anyone." He also revealed that contractors investigated by the ICPC claimed they had never met him, further solidifying his denial of any wrongdoing.

Victoria omini.

Nasir El-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State said that throughout his tenure, he never received bribes or kickbacks from contractors working in the state.

The former governor challenged anyone who has evidence that he received bribes to come forward and make that public.

He also stated that he has never stolen from anyone.

“I have never stolen a kobo from anyone. If any contractor has given me a bribe, let him come forward,” El-Rufai stated.

Further on alleged corrupt activities in Kaduna state, El-Rufai noted that several contractors who carried out projects during his time as governor have been investigated by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).

According to him, when the contractors were queried on their dealings with him (El-Rufai), they all said they had never meet him.

Rivers Govt Holds Back as Tinubu Declares State of Emergency

The Rivers State Government has chosen to reserve comment on President Bola Tinubu's declaration of a state of emergency, which suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, and state lawmakers

Victoria omini.

The Rivers State Government has taken a cautious approach to President Bola Tinubu's declaration of a state of emergency in the state. In a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, President Tinubu suspended Governor Sir Siminialayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, and members of the State House of Assembly. When asked for comment, Commissioner of Information and Communications Joseph Johnson said it was "too hasty" to take a position, stating that the president's declaration was enough for now.

This development has significant implications for the state, as a state of emergency grants the government sweeping powers, including deployment of armed forces, unwarranted searches, and arrest and detention of suspects without formal charges. The president has nominated Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) as Administrator to oversee the state's affairs during this period.

It's worth noting that the declaration of a state of emergency is a constitutional power held by the president, but it must be ratified by the National Assembly within two days. The situation is still unfolding, and it's likely that we'll see further developments in the coming days.

Sole Son of Widow Slain by Herdsmen Laid to Rest in Enugu Amidst Tears and Outrage

A 29-year-old student, Donatus Ndubuisi, was laid to rest amidst tears and anguish after being brutally killed by Fulani herdsmen in Enugu State. Ndubuisi, an only child of a widowed mother, was shot and killed while harvesting cassava with his mother. His father had also been killed by herdsmen in the community. The killing sparked a protest by thousands of women from seven autonomous communities, condemning the senseless violence and demanding justice.

Victoria omini.

A somber atmosphere pervaded the Enugu community of Eha-Amufu as the remains of 29-year-old Donatus Ndubuisi, a student of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), were laid to rest. Ndubuisi's life was brutally cut short by Fulani herdsmen on February 28, 2025, while he was assisting his mother on their farm.

The funeral ceremony, attended by family, friends, and community members, was marked by tears and anguish. Ndubuisi's mother, a widow, was overcome with grief, having lost her only child to the senseless violence.

According to eyewitnesses, Ndubuisi had traveled to his village, Amofia Umuhu Eha-Amufu, to visit his mother. Upon discovering that she had gone to their farm to harvest cassava, he decided to join her. Tragically, they were ambushed by Fulani herdsmen, who shot and killed Ndubuisi.

This incident is not an isolated one. The community has been plagued by violence perpetrated by Fulani herdsmen since 2021. The killing of Ndubuisi has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation, with thousands of women from seven autonomous communities taking to the streets to protest against the senseless violence.

The protest, which coincided with Ndubuisi's burial, was a call for justice and an end to the violence. The women, who marched through the streets, carried placards and banners, condemning the killing of Ndubuisi and other innocent community members.

In a statement, community leader Samuel Ede condemned the killing, stating that it was the height of the carnage that has been going on in Eha-Amufu. He called on the authorities to take decisive action to address the violence and ensure justice for the victims.

The Enugu State Government has been criticized for its handling of the crisis, with many accusing the authorities of failing to protect the community from the herdsmen's attacks.

In a bizarre twist, the Council chairman of Isi-Uzu LGA, Mr. Obiora Obeagu, took to social media to claim that the protest was sponsored by opposition forces to malign the Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah. He also denied that anyone was killed by Fulani herdsmen in the community, a claim that has been widely disputed by eyewitnesses and community leaders.

As the community mourns the loss of Ndubuisi, they are also demanding justice and an end to the violence. The killing of this young man has sparked outrage and condemnation, and it is imperative that the authorities take decisive action to address the crisis and ensure that justice is served.

Court Dismisses Claim of Judge's Recusal in Nnamdi Kanu's Case

Contrary to reports, the Federal High Court has denied claims that a new judge has stepped down from presiding over Nnamdi Kanu's trial. This comes after Kanu's legal team had expressed concerns about the impartiality of the judge, Binta Nyako, who had actually withdrawn from the case earlier

Victoria omini

The Federal High Court (FHC) has described a viral social media that the new judge assigned to adjudicate on the case against Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has stepped down as false and misleading.

In the viral report titled: “New Judge Steps Down from Nnamdi Kanu’s Case, Says His Arrest Was Wrong,” it was alleged that Justice John Tsoho, who is the Chief Judge (CJ) of FHC, is the new judge.

The report reads in part: “Justice John Tsoho, the new judge assigned to Nnamdi Kanu’s case, has quit.

“He said Kanu was brought back to Nigeria from Kenya illegally, and because of that, he can’t judge the case without going against his own beliefs.”Nigerian food delivery services

However, the FHC, in a statement signed by the Chief Registrar, Sulaiman Hassan, said the claim was “entirely unfounded, fictitious, grossly mischievous, damaging in intent and should be disregarded in its entirety.”

“The attention of Management of the Federal High Court has been drawn, with great concern, to an online reportage as above captioned.

“The court unequivocally refutes the false and misleading report, alleging that the Honourable Chief Judge, Hon. Justice John T. Tsoho, OFR, has stepped down from Nnamdi Kanu’s case and made statements regarding the legality of his arrest.”

According to Hassan, the true position is that the Honourable Justice Tsoho, in his capacity as Chief Judge, has reassigned Nnamdi Kanu’s case from Honourable Justice Binta Nyako to another (‘new’) Judge.

“The report referred to, is therefore, totally spurious.

“The defence team should hence prepare to receive instructions regarding the case, as may be issued by the new judge.

“The Federal High Court strongly cautions against deliberate misinformation to mislead the public and erode confidence in the judicial system.

“We urge the general public to be wary and rely only on verified information from official court sources.

“The court remains steadfast in upholding justice through due process of the law,”‘he said. The case between the Federal Government and Kanu had been reassigned to Justice James Omotosho, following Justice Nyako’s recusal (withdrawal).

Kanu’s dence counsel, Mr. Alloy Ejimakor, had in a statement on Saturday revealed that Chief Judge of the Federal High Court in Abuja, has reassigned the trial of his client to a new judge.

The IPOB leader is facing a seven-count charge of treasonable felony brought against him by the Federal Government.

He was initially arraigned before Justice Binta Nyako, before he asked the Judge to recuse herself from the case.

Victoria omini.

Ondo State's former First Lady, Mrs. Betty Akeredolu, has been summoned by a High Court in Akure, Ondo State, alongside Olumide Akinrinlola, publisher of Starnews Online Newspapers. The summons follows a petition by Ondo State Commissioner of Finance, Mrs. Omowunmi Isaac, who is demanding ₦1 billion in damages for alleged libel.

The court summons, signed by Registrar Adebanjo T.A., orders Akeredolu and Akinrinlola to appear in court within 30 days, or risk judgment being given in their absence. The summons warns that failure to comply will result in the claimant proceeding with the case without their input.

As the case unfolds, many will be watching to see how the court navigates the complexities of libel law in the digital age.
