The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has officially matriculated 9,454 fresh students into its various faculties for the 2025/2026 academic session, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s continued expansion and commitment to academic excellence.

Speaking during the matriculation ceremony, the Vice Chancellor, professor Francisca Bassey, warmly welcomed the new students into the university community and urged them to uphold the institution’s values of discipline, integrity and academic excellence.
Addressing the matriculating students, Professor Bassey described the occasion as a formal admission into the academic family of the university, reminding them that the institution places equal emphasis on excellence in learning and character.
She expressed appreciation to the Cross River State Governor and Visitor to the university, Bassey Edet Otu, for his continuous support and commitment to the growth and development of the institution. According to her, the governor’s leadership and timely interventions have played a key role in repositioning the university as a centre of excellence.
The Vice Chancellor also encouraged students to take advantage of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) introduced by the Federal Government to help ease financial challenges and enable them focus fully on their academic pursuits.
She disclosed that students who applied for the loan earlier in the year had already had their funds disbursed to the university and urged others to register promptly, settle their fees and complete their course registrations without delay.
Professor Bassey further announced that the university administration will continue its initiative of rewarding outstanding academic performance, revealing that the best students across faculties will again receive scholarships and special prizes during the forthcoming student week.
She noted that the prizes are personally sponsored from her salary as Vice Chancellor, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to promoting academic excellence.
While congratulating the new students, the Vice Chancellor warned that the university maintains zero tolerance for social and academic vices, including examination malpractice, drug abuse, bullying, sexual harassment, indecent dressing, vandalism and other forms of indiscipline.
She urged the students to make full use of the university’s academic resources, including the library, laboratories and ICT facilities, noting that the institution is gradually evolving into a smart campus where students can access learning resources digitally.
“As your mother in this institution, I remind you that greatness is not given but earned through hard work, discipline, perseverance and integrity,” she said.
Professor Bassey concluded by encouraging the students to remain focused, pursue knowledge diligently and strive to make their families and the university proud.
The ceremony formally inducted the students into the university’s multiple faculties and academic programmes, setting the stage for their academic journey at UNICROSS.
“Once again, welcome to the University of Cross River State. Congratulations to you all and God bless you,” the Vice Chancellor said.
