Elderly Woman Dies After Collapsing in Commercial Bus in Calabar

An elderly woman, identified as Mrs. Affiong Peters, has died after collapsing while travelling in a commercial bus in Calabar, Cross River State.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening while she was aboard an intercity commercial vehicle. The exact cause of her sudden collapse has yet to be determined, although some passengers speculated that it may have been linked to stress or an underlying medical condition.

Confirming the incident, the Cross River State Police Command said the woman suffered a medical emergency before her death.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the command said preliminary investigations revealed that at about 11:30 p.m., the driver of the commercial minibus, Mr. John Okon John, reported the incident at Atakpa Police Station.

According to the statement, the driver was transporting eight passengers from Watt Roundabout towards the Edgerly–Mbukpa–Afukam axis when one of the passengers requested to stop along Edgerly Road, off William George.

While making way for the passenger to alight, Mrs. Peters also stepped out of the vehicle but suddenly sat on the ground, became unconscious, and was unable to respond.

Fellow passengers quickly assisted her back into the bus and rushed her to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) for emergency treatment. However, she was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.

The police said the deceased's family has been notified of the incident and has commenced arrangements for the preservation of her remains.
