Calabar, December 24, 2025 — The Cross River State Southern Senatorial District Assembly has commended Governor Bassey Edet Otu for what it described as a remarkable turnaround in the governance and development trajectory of Cross River State.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday to mark the Christmas season, the Assembly said a critical assessment of the Otu administration revealed visible progress across key sectors, including security, infrastructure, fiscal management, and economic revival.
The statement, signed by the Chief of Party of the Assembly, John Offiong, noted that the state has experienced renewed confidence among residents and investors, attributing the development to what it called disciplined leadership and responsible governance under the current administration.
Reflecting on the period preceding the 2023 general elections, the Assembly recalled that Cross River State was grappling with institutional decay, declining infrastructure, and weak governance outcomes. According to the group, these challenges compelled stakeholders at home and in the diaspora to advocate strongly for a change in leadership.
The Assembly explained that its decision to support the return of power to the Southern Senatorial District was driven by principles of equity, zoning, and balanced development. It expressed confidence that the emergence of Governor Otu has justified that decision, citing improvements in security, efforts to address inherited debts, and a renewed emphasis on financial prudence and accountability.
Highlighting specific achievements, the Assembly pointed to extensive road construction and urban renewal projects in Calabar, renewed momentum on the Bakassi Deep Seaport project, and the development of a modern state library aimed at promoting education, innovation, and youth development.
The group also described the acquisition of a new state aircraft for Cally Air as a strategic move to enhance government efficiency, attract investment, and strengthen Cross River State’s regional and international engagement.
In the agricultural sector, the Assembly observed increased youth participation in productive ventures, particularly in rural communities, contributing to economic activity and improved livelihoods. It further noted that the construction of a new Governor’s Lodge in Ogoja reflects deliberate efforts to decentralise governance and restore the area’s historic administrative relevance.
While acknowledging that some policies of the administration have attracted criticism, the Assembly maintained that firm leadership is often required to reverse years of decline. It stressed that the true measure of governance lies in outcomes, which it said are increasingly reflecting positively in the lives of Cross Riverians.
The Assembly also remarked on the state’s growing appeal as a destination for tourism, holidays, and business, attributing the resurgence to improved security, better infrastructure, and a vibrant social environment. According to the statement, heightened economic activity during the recent Christmas season further underscores growing public confidence in the direction of the state.
Commending the governor’s team, the Assembly praised the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Emmanuel Ironbar, for what it described as strong coordination and leadership that have helped keep the administration focused on its mandate.
The Southern Senatorial District Assembly called on Cross Riverians to continue supporting the present administration, noting that sustained public support is essential for consolidating reforms and deepening democratic governance.
It reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for inclusive development, equity, and policies that will promote sustainable growth across all parts of Cross River State.
