The Inter Party Advisory Council in Cross River State has called on all elected representatives of the state in the National Assembly to place the collective interest of Cross River above personal and partisan considerations in handling the controversy over the state oil wells.
In a press statement issued on September 25 and signed by its State Chairman Engr Effiom Edet Okon, the council said recent public discussions surrounding the ownership of Cross River oil wells raise serious concerns because the matter remains central to the economic future of the state and its people. It said every action, statement and legislative engagement on the issue must be guided by justice, equity and constitutional responsibility.
The council urged Senators and members of the House of Representatives from the state to show unity and speak with one voice in protecting the legitimate interests of Cross River citizens. It added that the people expect visible commitment and proactive engagement from their representatives.
IPAC also appealed to the President of the Senate Senator Godswill Akpabio and other public officials to be cautious in making public remarks on sensitive matters that affect the territorial and economic interests of Cross River. It noted that statements from highly placed leaders carry weight and should promote mutual respect and confidence among communities.
The council said Cross River has a proud history of hospitality and peaceful coexistence but that such disposition should not be taken as a reason to compromise the rights and resources of the state. It reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue and peaceful advocacy to strengthen development and prosperity in the state.
