Calabar South: Mob Beats Two Suspected Robbers to Death

Two unidentified men have reportedly been beaten to death by a mob in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State following allegations that they were involved in a robbery incident.


The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, August 30, 2026, along Ekpo Abasi, near Yellow Duke, where the men were allegedly apprehended by residents on suspicion of robbery.


Confirming the incident, the Cross River State Police Command said its operatives responded to the scene, documented the situation and commenced preliminary investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and establish the identities of the victims.


The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said preliminary findings indicated that the two men had been apprehended and attacked by residents before the arrival of the police.


The Command disclosed that the bodies had been evacuated from the scene with the assistance of relevant local government authorities for proper preservation.


According to the Police, investigations are ongoing to establish the identities of the deceased and reconstruct the events that led to the mob action.


The Command also condemned the resort to jungle justice, warning residents against taking the law into their own hands.


The Police urged members of the public to report suspected criminals to law enforcement agencies and allow the appropriate authorities to investigate and prosecute offenders in accordance with the law.


The Command assured residents that additional information would be released as the investigation progresses.
