The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Cross River State Council, has expressed deep concern over the growing menace of reckless driving by some commercial dispatch riders, calling for urgent intervention to safeguard lives and restore sanity on the state's roads.

The position formed part of the resolutions reached during the Union's July 2026 Congress held on Wednesday at the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre in Calabar under the leadership of the State Chairman, Comrade Archibong Bassey.


The Congress observed that the increasing disregard for traffic regulations by some dispatch riders has contributed to avoidable road crashes and posed serious risks to motorists, pedestrians and other road users across the state.


Members therefore called on the Federal Road Safety Corps, the State Traffic Management Agency and other relevant authorities to intensify the enforcement of traffic laws and ensure strict compliance with established road safety standards by commercial dispatch riders.


The Congress maintained that effective monitoring, enforcement and compliance with road traffic regulations would significantly reduce accidents and improve safety on public roads.


The journalists also reaffirmed their commitment to promoting public interest journalism, accountability, press freedom and sustainable development while pledging to continue partnering with relevant stakeholders in advancing policies that protect lives and enhance the wellbeing of residents across Cross River State.


The resolutions were contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the Congress and signed by the Chairman of the Communiqué Drafting Committee, Comrade Eyo Charles, the Secretary, Comrade Ukorebi Essien, and the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Cross River State Council, Comrade Archibong Bassey.
