The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 39 year old man, Udeme Emmanuel Ekpeme, for allegedly impersonating a medical doctor, operating an illegal mobile clinic and defrauding members of the public through a fake employment scheme.
The suspect was apprehended by officers attached to the Uwanse Police Division in Calabar South following a complaint by Mrs. Edemawan Samuel, 45, who accused him of falsely presenting himself as a medical doctor and collecting ₦500,000 from her with the promise of securing employment for her children at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).
According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly used the false claim to deceive the complainant into releasing the money. During the investigation, officers recovered exhibits believed to be connected to the alleged offences. The suspect is currently in police custody.
The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, has ordered a comprehensive investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case and determine whether more people may have fallen victim to the suspect's activities.
The police said the command is carrying out a discreet investigation to uncover the full extent of the alleged fraud and identify any possible accomplices. The suspect will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations if sufficient evidence is established.
The Command also assured members of the public that updates would be provided as the investigation progresses and reiterated its commitment to protecting residents from fraud and other criminal activities.
