Destiny Cross River Project Celebrates Kanu Agabi at 80, Salutes Legacy of Justice and Public Service

CALABAR – The Convener of the Destiny Cross River Covenant Project, the Territorial Archbishop of Calabar, Archbishop Josef Bassey, has felicitated with former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Kanu Godwin Agabi, SAN, CON, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, describing him as one of Nigeria's most accomplished legal minds and a model of principled public service.

The goodwill message was contained in a statement signed by Archbishop Bassey and made available to journalists in Calabar.

According to the statement, Chief Agabi's 80th birthday provides an opportunity to celebrate a remarkable career dedicated to justice, constitutional democracy and nation-building.

Archbishop Bassey noted that throughout his distinguished public service, Agabi served Nigeria in several strategic capacities, including as Commissioner for Finance in the former Cross River State, Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Minister of Solid Minerals Development and Special Adviser to the President on Ethics and Good Governance. He also earned national recognition as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, with a career defined by intellectual depth, integrity and an unwavering commitment to the rule of law.

The statement described the legal icon as a statesman whose contributions have strengthened Nigeria's justice system while inspiring generations of lawyers and public servants.

"Chief Kanu Agabi's life demonstrates that the law is at its noblest when it is deployed in the service of justice, fairness and national unity. His career continues to stand as an enduring example of ethical leadership and selfless service," Archbishop Bassey said.

He recalled that the Destiny Cross River Covenant Project recognised Agabi's exceptional contributions at last year's Destiny Cross River Awards, where he received the Destiny Patriarchal Laureate Award for his enduring impact on law, governance and national development.

Archbishop Bassey prayed that God would continue to grant the elder statesman good health, wisdom and strength, while urging younger Nigerians to emulate his commitment to excellence, integrity and public service.
