Yakurr Peoples Club Calls for Calm Over Ugep–Idomi Land Dispute

The Yakurr Peoples Club Abuja has called on the Ugep and Idomi communities in Yakurr Local Government Area to exercise maximum restraint and embrace peaceful dialogue in resolving the lingering land dispute between them.

The club expressed deep concern over reports of rising tension, warning that any descent into violence would constitute a direct violation of the Ekori Peace Accord of 2017, which was reached under the aegis of the Yakurr Peace Mission as a historic covenant binding all Yakurr communities.

According to the club, the accord, reached in Ekori, remains the definitive framework for maintaining peace, unity and mutual respect across Yakurr. It stressed that the agreement clearly stipulates that any community that initiates violence stands in breach of a collective commitment and risks facing unified communal and institutional consequences.

The club maintained that no grievance, territorial disagreement or provocation justifies bloodshed among kinsmen and urged all parties to immediately de-escalate tensions, desist from inflammatory rhetoric, restrain youth mobilisation and seek lawful and traditional channels for dispute resolution.

It further noted that the progress and dignity of the Yakurr people can only be sustained in an atmosphere of peace, warning that history would judge harshly any leader or individual whose actions trigger avoidable conflict.

The Yakurr Peoples Club emphasized that the Ekori Peace Accord was born out of pain and sacrifice and must not be dishonoured through reckless actions. It added that Yakurr has moved beyond internal conflict and must not return to such dark times.

Reaffirming its commitment to peace, the club called on all stakeholders to choose wisdom over provocation and dialogue over confrontation, stressing that peace remains the highest expression of responsible leadership and insisting that Yakurr must not fight Yakurr again.
