A devastating explosion has torn through a private petrol and gas filling station on Edibe Edibe Street in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, leaving multiple residents injured and properties in ruins.
The incident, which occurred shortly before this report was filed, completely destroyed the facility identified as Fonex Gas Station. The resulting inferno engulfed key parts of the station, including its fuel and gas storage units, and also consumed vehicles parked within the premises.
Situated within a densely populated neighbourhood, the explosion extended its impact beyond the station, damaging nearby shops and residential buildings. The force of the blast sent residents and business owners fleeing for safety.
Several individuals sustained serious injuries, with some receiving immediate care at nearby patent medicine outlets, while others were rushed to hospitals for advanced treatment.
Emergency response efforts appeared delayed, as neither the police nor fire service had arrived at the scene at the time of filing this report. The absence of security operatives reportedly created an opportunity for hoodlums to loot goods from affected shops and the damaged facility.
In the meantime, large crowds gathered, with some residents making desperate attempts to contain the fire using sand, water, and other improvised methods.
Eyewitness accounts of the cause of the explosion remain conflicting. While some residents speculated that a phone call made near the gas dispensing area may have triggered the blast, others, including a local mechanic, pointed to a possible electrical fault or the use of faulty or expired equipment.
The incident also triggered emotional scenes, as distressed parents searched frantically for their children amid the chaos.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, said security personnel had been deployed to the area. He added that efforts were ongoing to mobilise fire service teams, with support from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), to bring the situation under control.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as emergency responders work to secure the area and assess the full extent of the damage.
