In a strong show of solidarity, no fewer than 196 councillors from the 18 local government areas of Cross River State have endorsed Governor Bassey Otu and his deputy, Rt. Hon Peter Odey, for a second term in office.
The endorsement was made on Tuesday during the Cross River State Congress of the All Progressives Congress held in Calabar, the state capital.
Moving the motion, Leader of the Akamkpa Legislative Assembly and Chairman of the Cross River Councillors’ Forum, Hon. Magdalene Ekpe, said the present administration had prioritised grassroots governance and carried councillors along in its policies and programmes.
She commended the governor for addressing outstanding gratuities and other entitlements, noting that councillors across the state were satisfied with the performance of the administration. According to her, the achievements recorded so far justified the call for continuity beyond 2027.
The motion was seconded by the Leader of the Obudu Legislative Assembly, Eneji Sam Ashibi, who voiced support for the governor’s re-election bid. The endorsement was thereafter adopted through a voice vote, with the majority of delegates affirming their approval.
Governor Otu, who assumed office in May 2023 after securing victory on the APC platform, has since pursued policies aimed at economic recovery, infrastructure renewal and strengthening governance structures in the state.
Party stakeholders view the councillors’ endorsement as a strategic signal of growing grassroots support ahead of the 2027 general elections.
