Rt. Hon. Bassey Akiba, Member of the House of Representatives representing Calabar Municipal and Odukpani Federal Constituency, has outlined a five-point agenda guiding his legislative activities, stressing that effective representation must go beyond plenary sessions.

Speaking during an interactive engagement with journalists, Akiba explained that three of the five pillars are constitutionally defined representation, lawmaking and oversight which he described as his “in-chamber mandate.”
According to him, the remaining two pillars constant communication with constituents and the establishment of grassroots economic structures are deliberate strategies to strengthen his constitutional responsibilities.
“For representation to be meaningful, there must be constant communication. A representative who does not hear from the people cannot speak effectively for them,” Akiba said.
He disclosed that his office regularly engages constituents through social media, town hall meetings, street interactions and sector-based consultations, ensuring that concerns raised by citizens are presented to government and feedback returned to the people.
On legislative performance, the lawmaker revealed that he has sponsored three bills, moved over 14 motions and submitted several petitions on behalf of constituents.
Akiba, however, maintained that bills and motions should not be seen as the sole responsibility of legislators, urging citizens to actively propose issues requiring legislative intervention.
