The Cross River State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has raised alarm over the deteriorating condition of several roads across Calabar metropolis, calling on the state government to urgently commence rehabilitation works to ease movement and improve accessibility within the city.
The union made the call during its September 2026 Monthly State Congress held at the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre, Calabar, where members deliberated on issues affecting the media profession, workers’ welfare and the overall development of the state.
The NUJ expressed concern that the deplorable condition of some roads had continued to create difficulties for motorists and residents, stressing the need for urgent intervention to restore the affected roads and improve transportation across the metropolis.
The union also appealed to residents to take greater responsibility for maintaining a clean environment by refraining from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in unauthorised locations.
According to the journalists, sustaining the clean and green status of Calabar requires the collective commitment of government and residents, particularly in the proper disposal of waste and protection of public spaces.
The Congress also drew attention to the condition of some public schools across Cross River State, describing the situation in severely affected institutions as a matter requiring urgent attention.
It called on relevant government agencies to undertake immediate interventions in schools facing serious infrastructural challenges and consider declaring a state of emergency where necessary to restore the affected institutions to acceptable and modern educational standards.
The union further urged practising journalists across the state to give greater attention to their health by undertaking regular medical check ups, noting the importance of prioritising the wellbeing of media practitioners in view of the demands associated with the profession.
Meanwhile, the Congress commended the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Bola Tinubu, through the Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, for the financial assistance provided to business and shop owners affected by the August 22, 2026 fire incident at the SPAR Shopping Mall on Barracks Road, Calabar.
The union acknowledged the release of cheques of N25 million each to the 18 affected business and shop owners as an intervention to support their recovery following the incident.
The Congress also commended the Cross River State Government for supporting state delegates who participated in the 2026 Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Guild of Editors held in Enugu State.
The State Congress further received a report from the Cross River State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, on the recently concluded 2026 SWAN National Triennial Delegates Conference in Kaduna State.
The SWAN delegation, led by its Chairman, Comrade Mike Akpang, and Secretary, Comrade Esien Ita, described the conference as successful and fruitful.
The resolutions formed part of the communiqué issued at the end of the monthly congress and signed by the State Chairman of the NUJ, Comrade Archibong Bassey.
