The Government and people of Cross River State are in mourning following the death of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, a respected Nigerian elder statesman, business leader, and close friend of the state. He died at the age of 90.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information & Orientation, Pastor (Hon.) Ekpenyong Ene Cobham, the state government described the late Tukur as more than just a successful businessman and top politician he was "family."
“Alhaji Tukur was more than a prominent businessman and first-class politician. He was family,” the statement said. “As an in-law to Cross River, he proudly identified with us and created opportunities for many Cross Riverians.”
The government also recognized his contributions to the state’s economy, especially during his time as Chairman of the now-defunct Calabar Wood Export Processing Factory Limited. His leadership, the statement noted, had a lasting impact on local industry and provided jobs for many households.
Beyond business, Tukur was remembered for his humanitarian work.
“He was a man who believed in building people and building institutions. Through his generosity and vision, many lives were lifted and many dreams were given a chance,” the statement added.
Alhaji Tukur passed away peacefully at his Abuja home on Saturday, September 12, 2026, after a brief illness — just three days before his 91st birthday.
The Cross River State Government has extended condolences to his family, the people of Adamawa State, and all Nigerians.
“We pray that God grants his soul eternal rest, and gives his loved ones the strength to bear this great loss,” the statement concluded. “Cross River will remember him not just for what he built, but for the warmth, wisdom, and dignity with which he lived.”
