A new political movement, the Grassroots Initiative for Otu/Odey 2027, has been officially launched with a strong call for continuity in governance and consensus support for the re-election of Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, and his deputy, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, in the 2027 elections.

Addressing journalists on Thursday, April 9, 2026, in Cross River State, the Founder and Director General of the initiative, Awade Friday, said the movement was born out of extensive consultations and a shared desire among citizens for sustained development, stability, and people-oriented governance.
He noted that the initiative seeks to mobilise support across all communities, stressing that politics must be rooted at the grassroots to truly reflect the will of the people. According to him, the group’s slogan, “Every village, every unit,” underscores its commitment to inclusiveness and widespread engagement.
Awade commended members of the media for their role in promoting transparency, accountability, and informed public discourse, adding that their contribution remains vital to strengthening democracy and amplifying citizens’ voices.
He explained that the central objective of the movement is to build a broad-based consensus among political parties, stakeholders, and the general public for the continuation of the current administration from 2027 to 2031.
“Our call is not driven by partisanship, but by performance, impact, and service to the people,” he said, insisting that the Otu/Odey administration has demonstrated competence and commitment in governance.
The group particularly highlighted the working relationship between the governor and his deputy, describing it as one built on loyalty, trust, and effective collaboration. Awade noted that Rt. Hon. Odey has consistently provided strong support and strategic partnership, contributing to the administration’s achievements.
He further stated that the government has recorded measurable progress across key sectors, including infrastructure, education, agriculture, and public safety. He cited the recovery of Tinapa Business and Resort Limited from the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria after 14 years as a major milestone in reclaiming critical state assets.
According to him, ongoing road rehabilitation, improvements in traffic management, and enhanced public lighting have contributed to safer and more efficient movement within urban centres, easing transportation challenges for residents.
The initiative also pointed to national recognitions received by the governor, including the Silverbird Man of the Year and The Sun Governor of the Year awards, as evidence of the administration’s growing reputation for impactful leadership.
Awade said such honours reflect public acknowledgment of Governor Otu’s efforts in strengthening institutions, improving service delivery, and driving development across the state.
He used the opportunity to commend the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Emmanuel Ironbar, for his role in enhancing coordination and governance, as well as Barr. Ekpenyong Akiba, Special Adviser on General Duties, whom he described as a key figure in the political structure and growth of the initiative.
The group called on political parties, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, youth groups, and women across the state to embrace consensus as a strategy for unity and progress.
“Consensus is not a limitation. It is a far-sighted approach to stability, growth, and collective prosperity,” Awade stated, urging stakeholders to avoid divisive political contests and instead rally behind tested leadership.
He disclosed that the initiative would, in the coming months, embark on community engagements, sensitisation campaigns, and town hall meetings aimed at deepening participation and fostering dialogue across all levels of society.
Awade also appealed to young people and women to play active roles in the democratic process, noting that their contributions are critical to shaping the future of the state.
He acknowledged the contributions of the governor’s wife, Bishop Eyoanwan Otu, to social development, particularly in the areas of education and community support, describing her efforts as complementary to government programmes.
The group further extended birthday wishes to her ahead of her celebration on April 10, 2026, praying for continued strength and impact in service to humanity.
In his closing remarks, Awade urged citizens to prioritise unity, brotherhood, and peaceful political engagement, stressing that collective interest must take precedence over division.
“Unity in purpose brings strength; consensus in leadership brings progress; and collective support brings prosperity,” he said.
The launch of the Grassroots Initiative for Otu/Odey 2027 marks the beginning of what the organisers describe as a statewide mobilisation effort aimed at consolidating support for continuity in leadership ahead of the next electoral cycle.
