Voters in the Calabar Municipal/Odukpani Federal Constituency of Cross River State have called on the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Chief Victor Felix Idem, to declare his intention to contest the House of Representatives seat in the 2027 general elections, warning that failure to do so could result in legal action.
The demand was conveyed in a statement issued by constituency leaders, Prince Bassey Edet, popularly known as Badest, and Barrister Emmanuel Inyang. They cited Idem’s track record in humanitarian service and grassroots leadership as the basis for their endorsement.
According to them, Idem has consistently demonstrated commitment to the welfare of the people and possesses the energy and dedication required to effectively represent the constituency at the federal level. They stressed that extensive consultations across the grassroots informed their position, adding that his refusal to run would undermine the confidence reposed in him.
The leaders further noted that, despite ongoing developmental strides under the administration of Governor Bassey Otu, the constituency still faces legislative gaps that require strong representation at the National Assembly.
They expressed confidence that Idem’s close ties with the grassroots and his strategic approach to governance would significantly improve the living standards of constituents within a short period.
Describing him as a unifying figure, they commended his inclusive leadership style, noting his ability to bring together people from diverse backgrounds while ensuring equitable distribution of democratic dividends.
The group also applauded Governor Otu for his people-oriented leadership and for creating opportunities that empower individuals, particularly the youth, to make meaningful contributions to the state.
In his response, Chief Idem appreciated the governor for entrusting him with his current role and reiterated his commitment to delivering on his mandate. He, however, stated that any decision to contest would depend on the directive of the governor, who remains the leader of the party in the state, as well as the party’s approval.
