International Day of Peace: Prince Edward (Prince 7) Urges Youth to Shun Violence, Calls for Stronger Global Support

 

Abi, Cross River State – September 21, 2025

As the world marked the 2025 International Day of Peace, Prince Godswill Edward Osim, popularly known as Prince 7, has appealed to young people across Cross River State and Nigeria to reject violence and embrace peacebuilding as a path to sustainable development.

Prince Edward, son of HRH Asodor Edward Osim, Paramount Ruler of Abi Local Government and Chairman of the Cross River State Traditional Rulers Council, spoke passionately about the central role of youth in either fueling or resolving crises. He lamented that young people are often at the frontline of conflicts, bearing the highest casualties and long-term setbacks.

“The sad reality is that our young people are the ones fighting the wars, shedding blood, and in the end, losing the most. They lose their lives, their education, and their future. This is not the right approach. We must redirect youthful energy to peace and development,” he said.

The youth leader further warned that insecurity in Cross River and other parts of Nigeria is being compounded by the unchecked proliferation of small arms and light weapons, which, after being used in communal conflicts, often find their way into crimes such as armed robbery.

Prince Edward stressed the importance of stronger international action and collaboration to curb these challenges.

“I believe the international institutions must be strengthened and given the will to enforce peace. They know our communities and even the perpetrators of these crises, but too often, peace processes are politicized, leaving room for conflicts to fester,” he stated.

Drawing lessons from the Bahumono community in Abi, where peace was restored after deliberate reconciliation efforts, Prince Edward argued that intentional sacrifices, dialogue, and unity are essential for healing and rebuilding trust among warring groups.

He also urged politicians to desist from exploiting conflicts for political gains, describing such tendencies as a major obstacle to peace.

Prince Edward concluded with a strong call for ongoing advocacy, grassroots dialogues, and youth inclusion in peacebuilding, noting that peace is not merely the absence of war but the presence of justice, unity, and opportunities for all.

The International Day of Peace, observed annually on September 21, is a United Nations initiative dedicated to promoting non-violence, tolerance, and partnerships for a more peaceful world. This year’s theme is “Act Now, for a Peaceful World
