Address by the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, at the 5th Edition of the Beatrice Bassey Ita Best Investigative Journalist Award on Saturday, September 20th, 2025 in Calabar, Cross River State

It is with great honour and humility that I stand before you today at this prestigious occasion—the 5th edition of the Beatrice Bassey Ita Best Investigative Journalist Award.

This event is more than a celebration of professional excellence; it is a commemoration of a woman whose contribution to Nigerian journalism remains deeply significant. The late Chief Beatrice Ita was not only a pioneering journalist but also a fearless advocate for truth and justice. Her legacy serves as a beacon of courage, integrity, and dedication—qualities that continue to inspire the media landscape in our country.

Today, we reflect on the immense challenges confronting journalism in Nigeria. From censorship and harassment to detention and, in extreme cases, the loss of life, our journalists face daunting obstacles in the course of their duty. Yet, in the face of these adversities, they have shown remarkable resilience and steadfast commitment to the values of the profession.

It is in recognition of such courage that we gather here tonight—to celebrate journalists who have demonstrated exceptional bravery, professionalism, and excellence in investigative reporting. Their work speaks truth to power, exposes wrongdoing, and drives societal progress. Indeed, investigative journalism remains the backbone of democracy, promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) remains resolute in its mission to defend press freedom, promote ethical journalism, and support those who champion the public interest through their reporting. Through initiatives such as our Press Freedom and Good Governance Awards, we continue to recognize individuals and institutions committed to openness and democratic values.

In this regard, I extend special appreciation to Senator Princess Florence Ita-Giwa for her partnership and continued support for investigative journalism. Her collaboration with the NUJ reinforces the importance of alliances in promoting a free and vibrant press.

As journalists, we must recommit ourselves to the highest standards of our profession—objectivity, balance, fairness, and truth. Let us remain vigilant, especially in this era of misinformation, and continue to be the conscience of the nation. Our role is not only to inform but to empower citizens and hold those in authority accountable.

I also wish to express my profound gratitude to the NUJ Cross River State Council, the organizing committee, and all those who have worked diligently to sustain this award and uphold its purpose.

To the award recipients—your work does not go unnoticed. You have shown courage in the face of risk, and commitment in the face of challenge. On behalf of the NUJ and the Nigerian journalism community, I say: Congratulations. You make us proud.

May the legacy of Chief Beatrice Ita continue to inspire generations of journalists. And may we all leave here tonight renewed in our commitment to the ideals of a free, ethical, and responsible press.
