ECHOES of HWOSA has celebrated its first anniversary by reaffirming its commitment to education and youth empowerment through an Essay Writing Competition and Scholarship Award Ceremony.
The event, held at the Chapel of Hope, Hope Waddell Training Institution in Calabar, Cross River State, brought together education stakeholders, alumni, media practitioners, parents, students, and invited guests to commemorate a year of impactful service.
As part of the anniversary activities, students participated in an essay competition designed to encourage critical thinking, creativity, and excellence in writing. The initiative reflects the publication's belief that education remains a vital tool for personal growth and national development.
Three outstanding students emerged as winners and were rewarded with full scholarships for the next academic session, Certificates of Excellence, school bags, and exercise books. The recipients are Gabriel Christopher Edet, who claimed first place, Michael Augustine Asuquo, who finished second, and Gideon Idorenyin Eno, who secured third position.
In addition to rewarding the winners, ECHOES of HWOSA distributed free exercise books to more than 570 students, extending the benefits of the celebration to a wider student population and reinforcing its dedication to improving access to educational resources.
The occasion was attended by several prominent personalities from within and outside the Hope Waddell Old Students Association (HWOSA). The National President of HWOSA, Arc. Ekpo Ekpenyong Akiba, was represented by Prof. Okpok Okon, while the President of HWOSA Calabar Branch, Elder Bassey Etim, attended with members of the branch executive. Also present were the Principal and staff of Hope Waddell Training Institution, the Global Coordinator and members of HWOSA Class of '89 (International), members of the ECHOES of HWOSA Editorial Team, alumni, parents, students, and other guests.
The programme also received wide media coverage through the Cross River State Broadcasting Corporation (CRBC), with support from its General Manager, Mr. Bassey Samuel Nsor. Additional publicity was provided by NaijaBlase TV, helping to showcase the initiative to a broader audience.
Although scholarships and educational materials formed a major highlight of the event, organisers noted that the greatest achievement was the renewed hope and excitement seen among the students, underscoring the life-changing impact of investing in education.
Speaking at the event, Publisher of ECHOES of HWOSA, Iyoho Ezekiel, expressed appreciation to everyone who contributed to the success of the anniversary celebration. He acknowledged the support of the National President of HWOSA, Arc. Ekpo Ekpenyong Akiba, the President of HWOSA Calabar Branch, Elder Bassey Etim, members of the branch, sponsors, partners, volunteers, Friends of ECHOES of HWOSA, and other supporters for believing in the publication's vision.
He also paid tribute to the Editor-in-Chief, Julius Ephraim (DGN), for his dedication and commitment to maintaining high editorial standards and strengthening the publication's influence.
Marking its first year of service, ECHOES of HWOSA reaffirmed its resolve to continue promoting academic excellence, supporting young talents, and driving community development through impactful educational initiatives. The success of the maiden anniversary celebration sets the stage for a lasting tradition centred on service, education, and youth empowerment.
