The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the death of a Traffic Management and Regulatory Agency (TRAMRA) officer who was allegedly attacked by a commercial bus driver during a traffic enforcement operation in Calabar.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred around 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 25, 2026, at Marian Hills in Calabar.
Speaking on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said preliminary investigations revealed that the incident stemmed from a confrontation between the driver and traffic officials.
According to him, a commercial mini-bus driver identified as Godwin Ukpai Okobo was involved in an altercation with TRAMRA personnel, which allegedly led to the death of Mr. Akerete Okon, an officer of the agency, after he was taken to the hospital for treatment.
In a separate statement, TRAMRA management alleged that the deceased officer was stabbed in the chest with a screwdriver during the clash.
The agency described the killing as tragic and condemned the attack, stressing that the officer was unarmed and carrying out his official responsibilities at the time.
TRAMRA stated that the late officer was engaged in routine traffic control and enforcement duties aimed at ensuring order and safety on the roads when he was reportedly attacked without provocation. Despite efforts to save him, he later died from the injuries sustained.
The agency also expressed concern over what it described as increasing hostility toward traffic enforcement officers, warning that attacks on public officials tasked with maintaining order undermine public safety and the rule of law.
Meanwhile, the police spokesperson assured residents that a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. He added that the command remains committed to conducting a fair and thorough probe, with further updates expected as investigations continue.
