Police Assault Driver, Destroy Passengers’ Phones at Itu Bridge

A disturbing incident involving police officers has been reported along Itu Bridge in Cross River State, raising fresh concerns over misconduct by security operatives.

The incident, which occurred at about 12:44 a.m., involved officers who stopped a commercial vehicle belonging to ABC Transport en route from Jibowu, Lagos. Eyewitnesses said the officers demanded money from the driver and, when he refused, assaulted him.


Passengers who attempted to document the incident had their mobile phones forcefully damaged by the officers. The situation reportedly escalated further as the officers made attempts to stab some of the passengers, creating panic and fear among those on board.


The development has drawn public condemnation, with calls on the Cross River State Police Command to urgently investigate the matter and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.


Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, Eitokpah A. Sunday, for official comments were ongoing at the time of filing this report.


The incident adds to growing concerns about the conduct of some law enforcement officers and underscores the need for accountability and strict adherence to professional standards within the force.
