The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River State Council, in partnership with Distinguished Senator Princess Florence Ita-Giwa, OON, has announced the 5th edition of the Beatrice Bassey Ita Best Investigative Journalist Award 2025, a prestigious platform that continues to celebrate excellence in investigative reporting.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River State Council, in partnership with Distinguished Senator Princess Florence Ita-Giwa, OON, has announced the 5th edition of the Beatrice Bassey Ita Best Investigative Journalist Award 2025, a prestigious platform that continues to celebrate excellence in investigative reporting.
This year’s event, themed around the enduring spirit of fearless journalism, will hold on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at Hogis Royale Hotel, State Housing Estate, Calabar, by 5:00 p.m.
The Award, instituted in memory of Beatrice Bassey Ita, fondly remembered by her pen name “The Pen is Mightier than the Sword,” seeks to inspire journalists in Cross River State and beyond to embrace ethical, courageous, and impact-driven investigative reporting.
The ceremony will feature distinguished personalities from academia, politics, and traditional institutions.
Professor Florence Banku Obi, Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, will chair the occasion.
Distinguished Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, OFR, CON, will serve as Guest Speaker.
His Excellency, Apostle Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, Governor of Cross River State, will grace the event as Special Guest of Honour.
His Eminence, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, the Obong of Calabar and Grand Patriarch of the Efik Kingdom, will serve as Royal Father of the Day.
In a joint statement signed by Comrade Archibong Bassey, Chairman of NUJ Cross River State Council, and Comrade Anietie Akpan, Chairman of the Award Planning Committee, the Union reaffirmed its commitment to promoting professionalism and integrity in journalism.
“The Beatrice Bassey Ita Award is not just about recognition, but about inspiring a new generation of journalists who will uphold the values of truth, courage, and accountability,” the statement read.
The NUJ called on media professionals, policymakers, and the public to support the event as a way of strengthening investigative journalism as a vital pillar of democracy.
